JBL Metal's stainless steel mesh systems are independently tested by SGS Group under the neutral salt spray protocol. The results verify corrosion resistance performance for coastal, marine, and high-humidity exterior applications โ documented by a third party, not self-declared.
The test creates an accelerated corrosion environment that simulates years of coastal exposure in a controlled number of hours. It removes the variable of real-world exposure time from the specification equation.
The neutral salt spray test (NSS) exposes metal specimens to a continuous saline fog โ 5% sodium chloride solution at 35ยฐC โ for a defined exposure duration. At specified intervals, specimens are examined and the time to first corrosion onset, corrosion area, and corrosion severity are recorded.
The test does not simulate a specific geographic environment. It creates a standardised, reproducible accelerated corrosion condition that enables direct comparison between grades, surface treatments, and manufacturers โ without waiting years for real-world exposure data.
Standardised saline fog concentration and temperature per ISO 9227. Continuous exposure throughout the test duration. No cycling โ constant aggressive environment.
Hours to first visible corrosion onset (rust staining, pitting, or blistering) on the specimen surface. Also recorded: corrosion area percentage at specified intervals and post-test surface condition.
SGS Group is one of the world's largest independent testing, inspection, and certification organisations. Test results issued by SGS carry international recognition and are accepted by specifiers, architects, and building authorities across 50+ countries.
JBL Metal's corrosion performance data is not produced by internal testing. SGS conducts the test independently โ the result cannot be adjusted, selected, or influenced by the manufacturer. This is the distinction between a specification claim and verified evidence.
The SGS test results document the corrosion performance difference between grades and surface treatments at the same exposure duration โ not just a single grade pass/fail. This enables correct grade selection for project-specific environments.
| Grade | Surface Treatment | Performance Class | Recommended Environment | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SS304 | Acid Pickled & Passivated | Good | Inland exterior ยท Urban ยท Interior | Standard specification for non-coastal applications. Not for direct coastal exposure. |
| SS304 | Electrolytic Polished | Good+ | Inland exterior ยท Mild coastal (5โ10km) | Electropolish improves SS304 corrosion resistance. Still not a substitute for SS316 in aggressive coastal environments. |
| SS316 | Acid Pickled & Passivated | Excellent | Coastal (<5km) ยท Industrial ยท High humidity | Molybdenum addition gives SS316 significantly higher chloride resistance. The minimum specification for coastal facades. |
| SS316 | Electrolytic Polished | Superior | Marine ยท Harbour ยท Severe coastal | Electropolished SS316 achieves the highest corrosion performance in JBL Metal's tested range. Required for <1km ocean proximity. |
The test result is not a marketing claim. It is a data point. The specifier decides what that data means for their project environment โ we provide the evidence.
Not every project requires third-party corrosion certification. The following conditions are where SGS test documentation is typically requested โ or should be proactively provided.
Facade specifications for buildings within 5km of the ocean in Oceania and internationally routinely require corrosion performance documentation. SGS test data satisfies this requirement and supports NCC durability compliance submissions.
Public infrastructure projects โ particularly transport terminals, waterfront structures, and bridges โ commonly include material performance specifications that require documented third-party testing rather than manufacturer data sheets alone.
Projects specifying 50-year design life, commercial warranty requirements, or institutional procurement standards often require corrosion performance evidence as part of the tender documentation package. SGS certification is accepted across these frameworks.
OEM equipment manufacturers incorporating JBL Metal mesh into certified product assemblies may require component-level corrosion testing as part of their own certification process. SGS test documentation is available for inclusion in OEM technical files.
The SGS test certificate and full test report are available for submission with project drawings. They are provided as project documentation โ not attached to catalogue product listings.
Use the drawing submission form. Include the project location (for environment assessment) and note that SGS certification documentation is required for the specification package.
Submit Drawings →Within 6 business hours, we will recommend the correct grade and surface treatment for your project environment โ with the SGS test results for the specified combination included.
The SGS certificate, full test report, material grade specification, and surface treatment confirmation are issued in writing as a project documentation package โ suitable for tender submission.
Submit your project drawings and location. We will identify the correct material grade for your environment and issue the SGS salt spray test documentation โ certificate, full test report, and written specification โ within 6 business hours. Everything in writing.
